POOL DRAINING, ACID WASH & CHLORINE WASH IN SCOTTSDALE, AZ AND GREATER PHOENIX METRO

Start fresh. Remove stains, algae, and buildup at the source.

When Chemicals Alone Won't Cut It

Some pools reach a point where no amount of shock, algaecide, or scrubbing makes a realdifference. When that happens, the issue is in the water itself — or embedded in the plaster.Pool Pilots helps Scottsdale homeowners reset their pool the right way, with professionaldraining and the appropriate wash treatment for the condition.

Asset 18

STUBBORN GREEN OR BLACK ALGAE

Algae that returns within days of treatment, or black algae rooted into plaster, usually can't be solved chemically. A drain and wash gets to the source.

Asset 18

DEEP STAINING ON PLASTER

Brown, yellow, rust, or mineral staining that brushing and chemicals can't remove is a sign the plaster itself needs treatment.

Asset 18

NEGLECTED OR ABANDONED POOL

Pools that have sat for months with murky, unswimmable water often require a full drain, clean, and fresh start before normal maintenance can resume.

Asset 18

SCALE BUILDUP AND CALCIUM DEPOSITS

Heavy calcium scaling and rough, crusty surfaces affect both the look of your pool and the effectiveness of your chemicals.

Pool Pilots Has You Covered

Every pool and every situation is different. We assess what your pool actually needs before recommending a treatment, so you get the right fix — not the most expensive one.

Asset 18

ASSESS THE POOL BEFORE RECOMMENDING ANYTHING

Plaster age, stain type, algae severity, and how long the pool has sat all factor into which treatment is appropriate. We look first, then advise.

Asset 18

DRAIN SAFELY AND COMPLETELY

Improper draining can crack or float a pool shell. We handle the process correctly, accounting for soil conditions, drainage, and timing.

Asset 18

APPLY THE RIGHT TREATMENT

Acid wash, chlorine wash, or a combination — matched to your pool's actual condition. We explain the recommendation in plain terms before any work begins.

Asset 18

REFILL, BALANCE, AND CONFIRM

Once the wash is complete, we coordinate the refill and balance your water chemistry so the pool is ready to swim within days, not weeks.

Which Treatment Does Your Pool Actually Need?

Not every dirty pool requires the same treatment. The right call depends on the severity of the algae, the condition of the plaster, and how long the pool has been out of service. Here’s how we think through it:

Acid Wash

Chlorine Wash

Best For

Deep stains, severe algae, extended neglect

Moderate algae, surface-level buildup.

How It Works

Muriatic acid strips a thin layer of plaster to expose a clean surface below

High-concentration chlorine kills and lifts algae and organic matter from the surface

Plaster Impact

Removes a thin layer — not recommended for thin or aging plaster

Non-abrasive — preserves plaster integrity

When It's the Right Call

Pool hasn’t been swimmable in months; staining is deep-set or widespread

Pool turned green but the structure is otherwise sound and plaster is in good condition

How Often

Every 5–7 years maximum

Can be done more regularly as conditions require

Cost

Higher — labor-intensive process requiring full drain and acid application

More affordable — effective for many common green pool situations

"If a chlorine wash can fix it, we will say so. Acid washing when it is not needed shortens the life of your plaster — and costs you more money. We give you the honest answer, not the upsell."

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN POOL DRAINING & WASH SERVICE

The process should feel transparent from start to finish. Here is what a typical service covers:

  • On-site assessment of water condition, plaster integrity, and stain type
  • Full drain via submersible pump with proper discharge and monitoring
  • High-pressure wash of walls, floor, steps, and waterline tile
  • Acid or chlorine wash application based on our assessment (explained before we begin)
  • Full neutralization and thorough rinse
  • Refill coordination — we work with your water delivery or tap fill schedule
  • Startup chemical balancing so your water is swim-ready from day one
  • Post-service walkthrough and care notes for ongoing maintenance

It Feels Like a Different Pool

A Pool That Looks Like New

Plaster looks brighter, stains are gone, and water runs clear. Most homeowners say the results are better than they expected, especially on pools that have been struggling for a full season or more.

Water Chemistry That Actually Holds

Algae and organic buildup in the plaster is one of the main reasons pools keep turning green. Once the surface is clean, your sanitizer works the way it is supposed to, and balancing becomes significantly easier week to week.

A Safer, More Comfortable Swimming Environment

No hidden algae, no bacteria lurking in plaster cracks, and no rough surfaces on feet and hands. A properly washed pool is simply a better pool to swim in.

Longer Life for Your Plaster and Equipment

Heavy algae and scale buildup accelerates plaster degradation and makes your equipment work harder. A clean reset now can extend the life of your surface and reduce wear on your pump and filter over time.

Why Call Pool Pilots for Draining and Washing

Stay ahead of pool problems with simple preventative care across Scottsdale and the Greater Phoenix Metro.

We Assess Before We Act

The right wash depends on your plaster's age and thickness, the type of staining, the algae species involved, and how long the pool has been neglected. We look at all of it before recommending anything.

No Unnecessary Upsells

If a chlorine wash handles the problem, we will not sell you an acid wash. Our goal is the right fix, not the most expensive one. We explain our recommendation clearly and give you options before any work begins.

Done Right Protects Your Investment

Improper draining, over-acid-washing, or skipping neutralization steps can damage your plaster permanently and cost thousands to repair. We follow the correct process every time, which means the job gets done once.

Service Quality Guarantee

If a service-related issue comes up immediately after the work is complete, contact us within 24 hours and we will re-check it at no charge.

Frequently asked POOL SERVICE questions

How do I know if my pool needs to be drained?

If your pool has turned completely green and doesn’t respond to shock treatment within a few days, has deep staining on the plaster that scrubbing won’t remove, has been sitting unused and neglected for months, or has extremely high cyanuric acid (stabilizer) levels that lock out chlorine, a drain and wash is likely the most cost-effective solution. We can assess it on-site and tell you definitively.

It can be, if done incorrectly. Pools — especially fiberglass and older plaster shells — can crack or ‘pop’ out of the ground when drained if soil conditions aren’t accounted for, or if the pool is left empty too long. We drain pools quickly and safely, and schedule the refill promptly. We don’t leave a pool sitting empty.

Most drain and wash services are completed within one day. Draining takes several hours depending on pool size, the wash and rinse process typically takes 2–4 hours, and then the refill begins. With a water truck, refill can be completed the same day. With tap fill, it usually takes 1–2 days. We’ll give you a realistic timeline before we start.

Acid washing removes a thin layer of plaster each time it’s done, so it should be done sparingly — typically no more than every 5–7 years. If you’re washing more frequently than that, there’s usually an underlying chemistry or maintenance issue worth addressing.

Done correctly, no. Acid washing is a controlled process that exposes a fresh layer of plaster and removes staining. Done incorrectly — with too strong a solution or left on too long — it can etch or damage the surface. We follow proper dilution and timing protocols every time.

Yes. Sometimes a drain and refill is all that’s needed — particularly to dilute high cyanuric acid levels or reset chemistry that’s completely out of range. We’ll let you know if that’s the case and only recommend a wash when the plaster condition actually calls for it.

We pump the water to an appropriate drainage location in compliance with local ordinances. In the Phoenix metro, this typically means draining to the street, an irrigation system, or a designated drainage area. We handle this correctly — improper discharge can result in fines.

We ask that someone be available at the start of service to walk through the assessment and again at completion for the post-service walkthrough. You don’t need to be present for the entire process.
